Young boy and grandfather found dead in tent during camping trip

What was meant to be an exciting and fun camping trip turned into a nightmare.

Now, questions swirl as to how a 12-year-old boy and his grandfather were found dead inside their tent deep in the wilds of Wales.

Pronounced dead at the scene

A family is in mourning after a tragic incident in Wales claimed the lives of 12-year-old Kaicy Brown and his 66-year-old grandfather, David Brown.

Sadly, the pair were discovered unresponsive in a tent during a family camping trip on September 14, 2024, by an uncle. Despite immediate efforts by emergency services, both Kaicy and David were pronounced dead at the scene.

The heartbreaking news has shaken the local community, including Kaicy’s elementary school, where his former headteacher, Phil Sherwood, set up a GoFundMe to support Kaicy’s grandmother and legal guardian, Mandi Brown.

Mandi, a teaching assistant with over 20 years of service at the school, is now facing the unimaginable loss of her grandson and son-in-law.

“This is a desperately sad situation, not least of all because Kaicy was only 12 years old,” Sherwood wrote. “We, as a school and local community of parents, friends, and colleagues, are in shock.”

What happened?

Sherwood described Kaicy as “a kind, thoughtful, and emotionally aware boy who lit up a room with his smile and sense of humor.”

He added that Kaicy “was also an exceptionally talented artist, impressing us with his dedication and attention to detail. Loved by classmates and teachers alike, he had such a bright future ahead of him.”

Friends of Kaicy’s mother, Jessica Brown, have also launched a separate fundraiser to assist with funeral costs, memorial arrangements, and legal fees related to family disputes over the boy’s final resting place.

GoFundMe

“It is with a heavy heart we make this request for our lovely friend Jessica,” they wrote. “The money raised will go towards funeral costs and a memorial, so she doesn’t have to face this unimaginable loss alone.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of death, with carbon monoxide poisoning suspected as a likely factor. Toxicology tests will help determine whether a cooking stove inside the tent may have produced the deadly gas.

Kaicy and his grandfather had been sleeping together in the same tent, while Kaicy’s uncle slept nearby.

Carbon monoxide is a silent and deadly threat — colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It can affect anyone, but children, older adults, and those with certain health conditions are especially vulnerable.

30 deaths per year

Common sources include fires, portable generators, and gas-burning stoves or heaters in enclosed spaces. Though camping feels like sleeping outdoors, a tent is still an enclosed space, and experts warn it can quickly become dangerous without proper ventilation.

Between 1990 and 1994, an average of 30 deaths per year in the United States were reported due to carbon monoxide poisoning in tents.

And the devastating loss of Kaicy and David Brown serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers of carbon monoxide and the importance of safety precautions while camping.

Families across the U.S. are encouraged to remain vigilant, ensuring their outdoor adventures remain joyful, and safe, for everyone.
