Will & Grace star Debra Messing faces major backlash for brutal message to Zohran Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral election win has stirred up plenty of emotions. Many supporters of other candidates have focused on criticizing Mamdani, highlighting his religion and history as reasons he shouldn’t be mayor. One of those who has sent brutal messages aimed at Mamdani is the Will & Grace star Debra Messing. Now, she is facing significant backlash on social media over her words.

Zohran Mamdani stood as the victor when votes for the Mayor of New York City election were concluded. The 34-year-old received 50,4 percent of the votes, beating the independent candidate Andrew Cuomo to the office.

Just as when Kamala Harris became the Democratic Presidential candidate last year, the smearing campaign against Mamdani focused on his beliefs and heritage. The fact that he is Muslim stirred up many emotions from the MAGA-dedicated crowd.

Even those with huge platforms and celebrity status, such as actor James Woods, have joined in. Another who showed her true colors and thoughts about Zohran Mamdani was Will & Grace star Debra Messing.

A Brooklyn, New York, native, she starred as Grace Adler in more than 240 episodes of the popular show, which ended in 2020. On October 25, she revealed to her one million Instagram followers that she was supporting Andrew Cuomo in the New York mayoral election.

But at the same time, she didn’t spare a word about her thoughts on Mamdani, sparking a huge backlash and outrage. Messing sparked outrage as she reposted a controversial comment where Zohran Mamdani was branded as a jihadist.

‘Will & Grace’ star Debra Messing under heavy fire over brutal Zohran Mamdani comments

She shared a political meme to her Instagram from another account named Persian Jewess, in which an image captures a voter filling out a fake ballot with two options: “A Democrat. Just a Democrat,” and the other reading “An actual communist jihadist. A literal Karl Marx-quoting America-hating jihadist.”

The post from the original account was captioned: “This isn’t just a mayoral race. It’s the battle for Democracy itself. New York City, make the right choice. Vote for Cuomo, Vote for NYC. Vote for Democracy,” accompanied by the hashtag #ZohranMamdani, per Yahoo News.

It didn’t take long for users to show their rage over Messing’s reposted image. Per the Daily Mail, the actress was described as both a “racist,” and an “idiot.”

“I truly hope Debra Messing never gets hired for anything ever again. The way she was calling Zohran a jihadist. The day OF the election. Just a deeply racist person,” one user wrote.

Another added: ‘Not to poke fun at a woman’s appearance, but why do y’all think Debra Messing looks like that now? Ugly rots from the inside.”

A third stated: “That was some sort of journey she has posted on her story. I would say meltdown isn’t quite enough of a strong word.”

Zohran Mamdani’s reply to smearing campaign

While many were outraged, others also offered the Will & Grace star their support.

“Glad to see she finally came to her senses,’ one user wrote, while another chipped in, “Good for her. Good for Debra Messing. At least somebody has some common sense. Unlike you, who is clearly brainwashed and highly uneducated.”

Another post from Debra Messing referenced 9/11, calling Mamdani, “Osama Bin Mamdani.” Again, people were horrified. Meanwhile, in his victory speech on Tuesday, he mentioned some of the smearing he had experienced during the campaign.

“The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist,” Mamdani said. “And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.”
