Who remember’s watching ‘Our Gang’ — the OTHER Little Rascals?

Many will remember the classic hijinx of the other little rascals known as ‘Our Gang.’ These zany kids were some of the first child performers to ever speak on TV. You may remember Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Darla, Porky and friends. The series was the first of its kind, bringing kids of all races, ages, and backgrounds together in the name of comedy. Instead of writing characters and auditioning kids, they wrote the parts based on the actors’ personalities.

The director encouraged the kids to improvise and have fun, and that’s just what they did. The first rascals were Sunshine Sammy, Mickey Daniels, Joe Cobb, and Gene Darling.

Then, new members came along, like Alan Farina Hoskins and Bobby Weiser Hutchins, who made their first appearances when they were only two years old. These young actors made the show even funnier.

This show went downhill due to the child actors growing out of their roles, and the production value wasn’t on par with movies of the era. The Great Depression affected many storylines as well.

Farina became one of the most talented characters in the series, and his emotional acting was top-tier. Farina’s frightened acting was filled with screams, but it always made the viewers laugh.

‘Our Gang’ had a run of short comedic films lasting from 1922 until 1944. Their entertainment influence spanned silent film and early sound in cinema. Over 220 short films and 41 child actors made Americans laugh for years of fun.
