When His Belly Suddenly Rose

When the diagnosis finally came, it didn’t roar; it arrived in a calm voice, a printout, and a doctor who had clearly said “cirrhosis” too many times to flinch. He felt his world tilt anyway. All the years he’d hidden behind jokes, calling it “just a gut,” collapsed into a single, undeniable truth: his body had been begging for mercy long before it screamed. Strangely, having a name for the damage made the terror feel useable. You can fight something you can finally see.

The fight itself was brutally ordinary. Early mornings in waiting rooms. Shakes and cravings he didn’t joke about. Friends who disappeared when the drinking stopped, and one or two who quietly stayed. Slowly, the swelling faded and his breath came easier. What changed most was not his lab results, but his loyalty to himself. For the first time, he decided that staying alive was not an accident, but a commitment.
