What to Do If You Find a Snake in Your Home

Finding a snake indoors can feel alarming, but in most cases, it’s not a sign of aggression. Snakes typically enter homes in search of food, warmth, or shelter, slipping through small gaps under doors, cracks in foundations, vents, or unscreened windows. Understanding this can help shift the focus from fear to safe, practical action.

The first priority is safety. Keep children and pets away, and try to contain the snake by closing off the room if possible. Avoid attempting to touch, trap, or corner it yourself. Even nonvenomous snakes may bite if they feel threatened, and identifying species without expertise can be risky. Staying calm and maintaining distance is the best immediate response.

Calling a professional is the safest option. Animal control, wildlife rescue organizations, or licensed pest specialists are trained to remove snakes humanely and handle the situation without harm to you or the animal. Their experience ensures the process is handled efficiently and with minimal stress.

Once the situation is resolved, prevention becomes key. Sealing entry points, installing door sweeps and window screens, and reducing clutter around the home can make a big difference. Managing rodents and insects—common prey for snakes—also helps discourage them from returning. While snakes play an important role in controlling pests outdoors, keeping your living space secure ensures this encounter remains a one-time surprise rather than a recurring concern.
