The suspect, 34-year-old Declaros Brown, now faces first-degree murder charges, and a disturbing jailhouse phone call has revealed unsettling details about his state of mind.

During the call to his sister, Declaros claimed he was “controlled” by external forces and insisted he did not know Iryna personally. “I hurt my hand, stabbing her. I don’t even know the lady,” he said, adding that he acted under compulsion. His sister revealed he had been seeking psychiatric help for years, but despite clear signs of mental illness, he was repeatedly released into the community.
