Tragedy Off Roatán: What We Know About the Fatal Island Flight

A routine island departure turned tragic when a small passenger plane went down in the sea shortly after leaving Roatán Island in Honduras. Witnesses described the aircraft struggling moments after takeoff before descending near the shoreline, prompting an immediate emergency response. First responders rushed to the scene as officials worked to account for passengers and begin rescue and recovery operations.

Honduras’ transport ministry said the Lanhsa Airlines flight was carrying 14 passengers and three crew members on a short domestic route to La Ceiba. Authorities later confirmed multiple fatalities, including two children, a French citizen, and a U.S. national. As families awaited updates, officials emphasized that response teams were coordinating medical aid and support services.

Among those lost was Aurelio Martínez, a celebrated Garifuna artist whose work helped bring his culture to international audiences. News of his death sparked tributes from musicians, cultural leaders, and fans, many of whom credited him with preserving traditions and elevating Garifuna music on the global stage.

Search and recovery efforts continue as investigators examine potential contributing factors. Authorities are reviewing weather conditions, maintenance records, and pilot communications to establish a clear timeline and cause. Honduran aviation officials have pledged a full investigation, while government representatives say they remain focused on transparency and on supporting the families and communities affected by the loss.
