Tragedy at Pawtucket Ice Arena Leaves Community in Shock

A high school hockey event in Pawtucket took a devastating turn on the afternoon of February 16 when gunfire erupted inside Dennis M. Lynch Arena. Families had gathered for what was meant to be a celebratory Senior Night matchup. Instead, shortly after 2:30 p.m., panic spread through the arena as spectators and players sought safety. Authorities later confirmed that two people were killed and three others injured in what investigators described as a targeted, family-related incident.

Law enforcement identified the suspected shooter as Robert Dorgan, who reportedly also used the alias Roberta Esposito. Officials stated that he allegedly opened fire on members of his family before fatally injuring himself. A woman identifying herself as his daughter told WCVB-TV that her father struggled with mental health challenges. Authorities emphasized that no players on the ice were physically harmed, though many witnessed the frightening events unfold. One player later shared that teammates initially mistook the sounds for popping balloons before realizing the seriousness of the situation and barricading themselves in a locker room.

Local and state leaders expressed grief and solidarity. Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien described the day as heartbreaking, noting that what should have been a joyful community gathering was overshadowed by violence. Dan McKee also released a statement offering condolences and support to those affected. School officials confirmed that all students and staff in attendance were accounted for, though many were understandably shaken.

Federal authorities, including agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are assisting local police as the investigation continues. Officials have pledged transparency as confirmed details become available. In the meantime, community leaders are emphasizing unity and encouraging anyone impacted to seek counseling and support services. As Pawtucket processes the tragedy, the focus remains on healing, remembrance, and standing together in the aftermath.
