The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

The human body naturally produces mucus to protect the throat and sinuses. However, excessive mucus can indicate infection, acid reflux, or inflammation. Here are the main causes and natural remedies to address them.

1. Acid Reflux
A common but often undiagnosed cause, acid reflux occurs when the stomach valve doesn’t close properly, allowing acid to enter the throat. This may cause heartburn or silent reflux (GLR), where only mucus-related symptoms appear.

Natural solution:
Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with water and drink before meals. If mucus decreases in a week, reflux was likely the cause.

2. Antacid Medications
PPIs and antacids suppress stomach acid but worsen reflux long-term.

Natural solution:
Use apple cider vinegar and take 5–10 betaine hydrochloride capsules before meals to improve digestion.

3. Postnasal Drip
Sinus infections from bacteria, fungi, or viruses cause mucus to drain into the throat, leading to coughing or throat clearing.

Natural solution:
Use a neti pot with distilled water, sea salt, and grapefruit seed extract to clear sinuses.

4. Overuse of Antibiotics
Antibiotics kill bacteria but allow fungi and yeast to overgrow, causing congestion.

Natural solution:
Use black elderberry, aged garlic, or oregano oil instead.

5. Grains and Dairy Products
Gluten and pesticides disrupt gut flora, increasing mucus production.

Natural solution:
Eliminate grains, seed oils, and fried foods for two weeks and monitor symptoms.

6. Airborne Allergies
Allergens like pollen, dust, and pet dander trigger excess mucus production.

Natural solution:
Get tested for allergies, use air purifiers, and introduce small amounts of bee pollen to build immunity.
