With UK households facing hotter nights — and only 5% having air conditioning — many are turning to electric fans.
But Dr. Naheed Ali, a health specialist, warns that sleeping with a fan all night may come with hidden health risks:
⚠️ Potential Health Risks of Sleeping with a Fan On- Dry throat & sinuses: Constant airflow can dry
out your airways, causing: Thicker mucus, Coughing or scratchy voice, Congestion that lasts all day.
Worsened allergies or asthma: Fans stir up dust, lint, dander, and pollen These particles can trigger
tight chest or sneezing. Muscle stiffness: Exposure to a cold air stream can cause neck and shoulder tension by making muscles constrict
✅ Doctor’s Tips to Use a Fan Safely – Use a timer – Set the fan to turn off after the first 90 minutes of sleep.
Avoid direct airflow – Point it at a wall to reduce intensity. Stay hydrated – Keep water nearby for
dry mouth or throat. Limit allergens: Wash bedding weekly. Replace or clean air filters regularly.
