Phil Collins says he can “barely hold a drumstick anymore”

Phil Collins, the acclaimed Genesis drummer and singer, admits his health challenges have impacted his musical career, saying, “I can scarcely hold a stick with this hand.” Collins, whose legacy includes eight Grammy wins and over 100 million records sold both solo and with the band, started drumming at five and joined Genesis in the 1970s, eventually becoming their lead singer.

Despite his reluctance to take the role after the original lead left, Collins thrived, producing hits like “In The Air Tonight.” Decades later, after leaving Genesis, he rejoined for The Last Domino tour, which was postponed due to the pandemic.

Now, facing physical limitations, Collins expresses sadness over his inability to drum alongside his son Nicholas, who fills in as the band’s drummer. Genesis member Tony Banks praises Nicholas, noting, “Nic is a superb drummer.” Yet, Collins hints at retirement, reflecting on his future: “I believe it’s probably putting it to bed to some extent. I’m not sure if I want to go out on the road anymore.”
