Never position your bed like this: myth or reality according to Feng Shui?

At its core, Feng Shui is about how arrangement, light, and order influence daily life. It’s an old Chinese practice, but a lot of it comes down to common sense: clear paths, fresh air, and rooms that don’t feel crowded.

The concept is that energy (commonly referred to as chi) moves around in our homes, offices, and environments, and the placement of items can harmonize with that energy flow or counteract it. When energy flows without resistance, a place usually feels calmer, more comfortable and more easy to be in.

So, how should our bed be positioned according to Feng Shui?

If your feet face the door when lying on your bed, that’s something known as a “coffin position.” According to Feng Shui, this position is thought to let the energy “slip” during sleeping. The name comes from the old practice of carrying the dead out feet first, so the position has always felt uncomfortable to people, and Feng Shui just confirms it. It has also been linked to low energy and emotional strain, not because it’s dangerous, but because it can make you feel exposed and on edge at night.

What is the correct way to position your bed?

To encourage positive energy and avoid disruption, Feng Shui suggests a few simple bedroom choices such as placing the headboard against a solid wall, keeping the bed out of direct alignment with the door, and avoiding sleeping with your feet pointing straight toward it.

If moving the bed isn’t possible, a screen or plant between the bed and the door can help. It’s also recommended to keep the space under the bed clear so energy can move freely.

Superstition or ancestral wisdom?

While none of these claims have been backed up by science, those who use these principles say they sleep better, are in a better mood, and see positive effects in their lives as a result. Seen this way, Feng Shui isn’t so much superstition as it is paying attention to how your surroundings make you feel.

Take away the hype and the essence is fairly simple: the way we arrange our furniture can impact how we feel. Thoughtful placement of your bed can enable you to sleep better, conserve your energy, and make you feel more at peace in your own home.
