‘Matcha mouth’ explained as dentist issues ‘worrying’ warning over popular drink

An urgent warning has been issued following a multistate outbreak of E. coli infections linked to raw cheddar cheese produced by Raw Farm in California. The situation has raised concerns about food safety and public health.

At least seven people across California, Florida, and Texas became ill after consuming the cheese. Most of the cases involved young children, particularly those aged three or younger, making the outbreak especially concerning.

The reported illnesses occurred between September 2025 and February 2026. While no deaths have been confirmed, the infections have prompted increased monitoring and investigation by health authorities.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised Raw Farm to voluntarily recall the affected products. However, the company has declined, stating that testing has not identified E. coli contamination in its cheese.

Despite the company’s position, health officials are urging consumers to avoid eating the suspected products. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as severe stomach cramps or bloody diarrhea is advised to seek medical care promptly.

In a separate health topic, dentist Dr. Sofina Ahmed has explained why many people wake up with an unpleasant taste in their mouths. A common cause is dry mouth during sleep, which allows bacteria to grow more easily.

Mouth breathing, sinus issues, and poor sleep quality can all contribute to this condition. When saliva production decreases overnight, it becomes easier for odor-causing bacteria to build up.

To reduce morning bad taste, Dr. Ahmed recommends staying hydrated, chewing sugar-free gum, and brushing the tongue regularly. Persistent or unusual tastes, such as metallic or salty sensations, may require medical evaluation.
