A print of a picture of Jesus that rests in a Russian Orthodox church in Honolulu, Hawaii, has been making headlines for reasons you may not expect.

When the image first began ‘leaking,’ locals thought the humidity levels were causing issues with the cheap material used to make the frame. However, Father Nectarios Yangson noticed something that caused him to pause.

He then wrote a letter to his parish, saying, “During the last week of September, I began to notice an unbelievably strong smell of myrrh, at home, in my car, even at work. I couldn’t explain it. We were afraid. We asked one another if we had recently cleaned or anointed the icons, and both of us said ‘no.’”

What he says he found next was something unexplainable. A bead of fragrant oil forms on the left knee of the baby Jesus. The sticky substance that is clear in nature was identified as myrrh by Father Yangson, was leaking from the image and did not appear to have any source.

Later reports from the media showed videos and images of the liquid seeping out from the frame and soaking into the cloth placed beneath it.

The scent, as described by those who have seen this in person, is said to be like ‘roses.’ The scent was so strong that even the priest’s cat noticed.

Since then, people have been coming to the Holy Theotokos of Iveron Russian Orthodox Church to witness what they are referring to as a miracle in person.

They say that the substance has healed illnesses in people, such as blindness and paralysis, as well as chronic pain and even cancer, according to Nectarios’ letter.

The Russian Orthodox Church recognized the ‘Hawaiian Iveron Icon’ in 2008 as miraculous, granting Father Nectarios permission to travel with the picture. He has now traveled with it to over 100 locations around the United States and Europe. Now millions of people have venerated the miracle.

Father Nectarios said, “Some days have been completely dry, while on other days they are covered in myrrh. Yet whether they stream or not, they continuously give off an extremely strong scent of roses.”

The priest shared, “It is truly a great miracle! I sometimes wonder if it is a warning.”
