Keith Urban finally breaks silence over Nicole Kidman divorce

When rumors about Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s divorce swirled, they were further fueled by the fact that Keith changed the lyrics to a song during a performance.

Now, the country singer is clearing the air.

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman were married for almost 20 years and were regarded as a strong power couple. Which is why their recent divorce announcement has left thousands of people all over the world in complete shock.

The couple reportedly separated at the beginning of summer. But the actress filed for divorce officially on September 30.

Kidman filed in a Tennessee court, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason for seeking divorce. According to people close to the couple, Kidman was reluctant to divorce.

One of the early signs of things being rocky in their marriage was when Keith Urban noticeably changed lyrics to a song during a performance. In his song, ‘The Fighter,’ Urban changed the lyrics from, “When they’re tryna get to you, baby, I’ll be the fighter,” to “When they’re tryna’ get to you, Maggie I’ll be your guitar player.”

In the lyric change, he was referring to his guitarist, Maggie Baugh. She shared the video to her Instagram account at the time, writing in the caption, “Did he just say that?”

The lyric change sparked backlash from fans who were upset that the singer would change the lyrics to a song that was apparently inspired by his wife.

However, Urban is now insisting that this is not something he has done for the first time and is urging people not to ‘stop reading stuff into’ his decision.

During his last stop of his High and Alive World Tour in Nashville, Urban addressed the crowd before he sang ‘You’ll Think Of Me.’

“I’ve been covering it like this for a long time,” he shared before he sang the lyrics as but I betcha’ think about me’ from ‘but you’ll think of me.’

PEOPLE magazine also reported that this was not the first time Urban changed the lyrics to a song.

In 2017, when he was performing the same song with Carrie Underwood at the CMT Music Awards, he changed the lyrics to, “Carrie Underwood, I’m gonna be your fighter!”

‘The Fighter’ was written in the early days of Urban’s relationship with Nicole Kidman. He said in a 2017 interview, “It’s all from a conversation my wife and I had early on in our relationship, that when things get tough, I need to hold her tighter and just try to take care of her.”
