International Film Star Passed Away At 72

French actor Tchéky Karyo, best known for his roles in Nikita and The Missing, has died at 72.

Born in Turkey and raised in Paris, Karyo passed away on Friday after a battle with cancer, according to AFP.

Over his nearly 40-year career, he became known for his strong supporting roles in both French and international films, later gaining new acclaim on television.

His wife, actress Valérie Keruzoré, and their children confirmed his passing in a statement.

Tchéky Karyo, the acclaimed French actor known for his intense screen presence and powerful performances in both film and television, has died at the age of 72.

Born Baruh Djaki Karyo on October 4, 1952, in Istanbul, Turkey, he was of Sephardic Jewish descent. His family moved to Paris when he was a child, where he later studied drama at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. Karyo began his career on stage, performing with the legendary Daniel Sorano Company, before transitioning to film in the late 1970s.

He rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s with notable roles in Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita (1990) and The Bear (1988). International audiences came to know him for his memorable turns in The Patriot (2000), Bad Boys (1995), GoldenEye (1995), and Kiss of the Dragon (2001). Known for his versatility, Karyo effortlessly moved between French art-house cinema and Hollywood action films, often portraying complex, emotionally charged characters.

 

 

In later years, Karyo found renewed fame on television, most notably starring as retired French detective Julien Baptiste in the BBC’s critically acclaimed series The Missing and its spin-off, Baptiste. His performance earned widespread praise for its depth, empathy, and quiet intensity, introducing him to a new generation of viewers.

Beyond acting, Karyo was also a musician and singer-songwriter. He released several albums that blended poetic lyrics with folk and rock influences, showcasing another facet of his artistry.

Throughout his nearly four-decade career, Karyo remained one of France’s most respected and recognizable performers, admired for his dedication to his craft and his ability to bring authenticity to every role.
