How to Help Your Child Manage a Painful Plantar Wart Before an Event

A rough, tender spot on the sole with tiny black dots is often a plantar wart—a common skin condition caused by a virus. It can be especially uncomfortable because it sits on a weight-bearing area of the foot, making every step feel more painful. While it can be upsetting—especially right before something important like a dance recital—there are safe ways to ease the discomfort quickly.

Start with simple relief. Soak her foot in warm water for 10–15 minutes to soften the skin, then dry it gently. You can use an over-the-counter wart treatment designed for children, such as a mild salicylic acid product, following the instructions carefully. After that, place a cushioning pad or bandage around the area to reduce pressure when she walks or dances.

Next, focus on protecting the spot during activity. Use soft padding or gel inserts inside her shoes to limit direct pressure on the wart. If she’s wearing dance shoes or tights, make sure they aren’t too tight, as friction can worsen the pain. Even small adjustments in comfort can make a noticeable difference for short-term relief.

Avoid trying to cut, pick, or remove the wart at home, as this can lead to irritation or infection. If the pain becomes severe, or if you notice swelling or discharge, it’s best to contact a healthcare professional. For now, keeping her comfortable and supported will help her get through the event—and she’ll remember that care and encouragement just as much as the performance itself.
