Former Child Star Blake Garrett Dies at 33 After Medical Emergency

Blake Garrett, a former child actor remembered by many for his role in the 2006 family film How to Eat Fried Worms, has died at the age of 33.

Garrett passed away on Sunday, February 8, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His mother, Carol Garrett, confirmed his death and said the family is awaiting official autopsy results to determine the exact cause.

Born Nolan Blake Garrett in Austin, Texas, he showed a love for performing from a young age. As a child, he appeared in local theater productions including Aladdin and His Magical Lamp and Peanuts: A Charlie Brown Tribute. He later performed in well-known stage shows such as The Wizard of OzAnnie, and Grease.

One of his earliest big opportunities came at just 10 years old, when he toured nationally with Barney’s Colorful World International Tour, giving him professional experience on large stages and in front of wide audiences.

Breakthrough Role

Garrett became widely known to young audiences through the 2006 movie How to Eat Fried Worms, where he played the character Plug. The film, based on the popular children’s book, followed a new student who accepts a dare to eat worms as part of a bet with a bully.

The young cast received recognition at the time, including a Young Artist Award for Best Young Ensemble Cast. For many millennials and Gen Z viewers, the movie became a memorable and quirky childhood favorite.

Life After Acting

In recent years, Garrett had been living a quieter life in Oklahoma. According to his mother, he had maintained sobriety for three years and was proud of the progress he had made. Those close to him say he had been focused on rebuilding his life and moving forward positively.

Carol Garrett shared that Blake had recently gone to the emergency room due to severe pain and was diagnosed with shingles. She expressed concern that he may have tried to self-manage the pain, and fears his passing could have been an accident. However, the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
