Eric Dane’s wife reveals why she called off their divorce weeks after actor’s ALS diagnosis

Grey’s Anatomy alum Eric Dane was diagnosed with ALS earlier this year. The support from his wife and two daughters has been vital. However, it was close that he and his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, divorced, but it was called off just weeks before his diagnosis was made public.

Eric Dane was diagnosed with ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in April this year. In a statement to People Magazine at the time, he said, “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,”.

The former Grey’s Anatomy star has since been very outspoken about the disease, which he, in October, called “nasty.” He was set to appear at their reunion at the Emmy Awards, but sadly, Dane had to cancel after a bad fall that left him hospitalized.

“ALS is a nasty disease,” he said. “So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head.”

Eric Dane has the full support of his family. In late October, he was seen out with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and daughter Georgia. Dane, sitting in a wheelchair, was with his wife and 13-year-old daughter at a sushi restaurant in West Hollywood.

However, it was not always certain that his wife would be there today. People Magazine in March reported that Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, after 14 years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Rebecca, who recently starred in Quentin Tarantino’s film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has requested joint legal and physical custody of their children, and additional spousal support. However, in March of this year, seven years after filing for the divorce, she dismissed it.

Weeks later, Dane went public with his ALS diagnosis. Now, Rebecca Gayheart has appeared on the Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen podcast, explaining the reason why the divorce never became a reality.

Gayheart explained that she wanted to be an example to her daughters, urging them to support others no matter what has happened.

“And he is our family, he is your father. We show up and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it, and that we will get through it the best we can,” Gayheart said. “I mean, it’s super complicated for me.”

Supports their daughters

Moreover, Rebecca said that it’s been “humbling” to help her daughters through this very tough period as well.

“I think one piece of this that I hope I’m passing to my kids is the idea that you can show up for someone and be there for them, but you also have to show up for yourself, and that this is life,” she added.

“Life, sadly, is just moments, good and bad, strung together. There’s gonna be good ones, there’s gonna be bad ones, there’s gonna be exciting ones, it’s gonna be really sad.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Eric Dane and his family.
