Donald Trump’s Latest Dig at Canada’s Prime Minister: The ‘Governor’ Nickname

In a move that’s turned quite a few heads, Trump calls Trudeau Governor instead of “Prime Minister” – and it’s already fueling tension between the two leaders. The U.S. president didn’t hold back while responding to Canada’s new retaliatory tariffs, slapping an undermining title on his North American neighbor’s head of government.

Escalating Tariffs Spark a War of Words

Recently, President Donald Trump announced tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, claiming they need to be “held accountable for illegal immigration and drug trafficking.”

Canada got hit with a 25 percent tax on its exports to the U.S., plus a 10 percent tariff on energy products. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau fired back by slapping American imports with a matching 25 percent charge.

While the trade standoff was enough to raise eyebrows, Trump calls Trudeau Governor to mock him on social media, hinting he sees the Canadian leader as more of a subordinate than a fellow head of state.

Trump’s Unapologetic Nicknaming

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he imposes new tariffs on the U.S., we’ll match it immediately!” Observers saw this pointed choice of words as a direct dig, undermining Trudeau’s office as Prime Minister.

Trudeau was quick to respond in the press, slamming the U.S. for “starting a trade war with its closest partner,” questioning Trump’s logic in one breath while referencing how the White House approaches relations with Russia in another.

And let’s not forget, this friction comes right after Trump’s public scuffle with other world leaders – from Zelenskyy to a push to rename the Gulf of Mexico and clamp down on birthright citizenship.

Fallout and International Reaction

The feud between the United States and Canada has already rattled supply chains and stoked fears among businesses on both sides of the border. As if these developments weren’t enough, China’s also incensed, threatening to retaliate after tariffs on its goods soared to 20 percent. Mexico hasn’t sat idle either – though it’s balancing carefully between economic concerns and political alliances.

By labeling Canada’s PM a mere “governor,” the White House signals it’s ready to keep raising the stakes. As Trump calls Trudeau Governor repeatedly, tensions only seem to grow. Whether they’ll cool down or spiral into a full-blown trade war remains the burning question.
