Donald Trump mocked by USA women’s hockey team during Saturday Night Live

During the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, the United States achieved a historic milestone by winning gold in both the men’s and women’s ice hockey tournaments. It marked the first time Team USA completed a clean sweep in Olympic hockey, with the men securing a dramatic 2–1 victory over Canada — their first Olympic gold in 46 years — and the women matching that score in overtime after Megan Keller netted the decisive goal. The triumph drew national celebration, and shortly afterward, President Donald Trump phoned the men’s team to congratulate them.

During that call, Trump extended an invitation for both teams to attend his State of the Union address on February 24. However, while mentioning the women’s squad, he made a remark that quickly stirred controversy. “We’re going to have to bring the women’s team,” he said, adding that he believed he would “probably be impeached” if they were not invited. Though framed as humor, the comment sparked backlash and shifted attention away from the athletic achievement.

Ultimately, the women’s team declined the invitation, citing prior academic and professional commitments. In an official statement, a spokesperson expressed gratitude for the recognition while explaining that scheduling conflicts prevented attendance. The decision kept the focus on logistics publicly, though discussion around the president’s comment continued.

Team captain Hilary Knight later described the remark as “distasteful,” arguing that it overshadowed the success of women representing Team USA on the Olympic stage. She voiced her concerns during an appearance on SportsCentre, emphasizing that the focus should have remained on the athletes’ accomplishments rather than political commentary.

The situation gained renewed attention when Knight and teammate Megan Keller appeared on Saturday Night Live alongside members of the men’s team. In a playful jab, Knight opened by saying, “It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys, too,” drawing loud applause. The moment quickly went viral, reframing the conversation with humor.

The episode underscored how sports victories can intersect with politics, sometimes shifting headlines from historic achievements to off-ice controversy.
