Does Unplugging Appliances Really Save Energy?

In modern households, many devices continue to use energy even when turned off. This hidden consumption, known as standby power or “vampire power,” can make up nearly 10% of electricity use. Though each item draws only a little energy, the cost adds up over time.

Common culprits include coffee makers left plugged in overnight, idle printers, or chargers that stay connected even without a device. These may seem minor, but together they create a steady drain. While large appliances such as refrigerators or washing machines must remain connected, smaller electronics are better candidates for unplugging when not in use.

Unplugging doesn’t have to be a nightly chore. A more practical approach is to focus on items rarely needed around the clock. Using switched power strips or smart plugs can make the process simple, letting you cut power to multiple devices at once without extra effort.

Beyond lowering bills, unplugging offers another benefit: safety. Older or worn-out devices left plugged in can increase fire risk. Disconnecting them reduces hazards while also saving energy. By targeting standby users, you make your home safer and more efficient without sacrificing convenience.
