Beauty queen shot dead in restaurant after posting fateful Instagram photo

On the surface, Landy Párraga seemed to have it all.

The 23-year-old beauty had been named one of Ecuador’s most stunning women, boasted millions of Instagram followers, and even launched her own sportswear line.

But all of that came crashing down when Párraga was tragically murdered while having lunch at a restaurant — just after posting a fateful photo.

Landy Párraga was born in Quevedo, Ecuador, and grew up with big dreams and a drive to shine. From a young age, Landy embraced the world of pageantry, starting as the queen of her parish before rising to vice queen in her hometown.

Over the years, she collected several crowns, from representing her university to taking part in national and international contests. In 2022, she placed fifth in the Miss Ecuador competition.

But her journey wasn’t just about beauty and titles — Landy had a vibrant presence, captivating everyone with her charm, ambition, and a growing following on social media. The Ecuadorian beauty queen boasted 172,000 followers on Instagram and beyond her online presence, Landy ran a popular home goods shop and had her own sportswear line.

But behind the glamour, her life intersected with complex circles, including ties to figures involved in criminal investigations. And it seems these connections ultimately cost her life.

Inside the brutal murder

On April 29, 2024, Landy Párraga was gunned down by two hitmen who entered a shopping center restaurant.

In a matter of seconds, the attackers approached her table, where she was with a companion, and fired up to three shots before fleeing.

Authorities believe a photo she shared of her distinctive octopus ceviche on Instagram may have given the killers a clue to her location. Disturbing footage shows one gunman shooting Párraga at close range while the second stood guard by the restaurant door. She was struck multiple times and died shortly afterward, leaving fans and followers in shock.

Landy Párraga’s life and untimely death were closely linked to one of Ecuador’s most infamous criminal cases. Authorities revealed that the 23-year-old model and influencer was allegedly romantically linked to Leandro Norero, a married drug trafficker known as “El Patrón” (The Boss), who was killed in a prison riot roughly 18 before Landy’s death.

Investigators discovered messages on Norero’s phone suggesting he had lavished Landy with expensive gifts, including apartments and cars.

In one intercepted conversation with an associate, Helive Ángulo, Norero warned: “If my wife comes across anything about her, I’m screwed… her name cannot come out anywhere. Otherwise, my world will come crashing down.”

Who orchestrated the killing?

Ángulo was among around 50 people facing charges in Operation Metastasis, a sweeping investigation into a criminal network accused of corrupting Ecuadorian officials.

Those prosecuted include judges allegedly granting favorable rulings to gang leaders, police officers suspected of tampering with evidence and smuggling weapons into prisons, and the former head of Ecuador’s prison authority accused of giving preferential treatment to high-profile traffickers.

Norero himself had a history of evading authorities, even faking his own death during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When he ultimately died in a prison fire, his body was never positively identified, though official reports confirmed his death during the riot.

Landy’s name surfaced in conversations on his phone during the investigation, linking her indirectly to his criminal network. Authorities were also looking at whether her businesses — including the sportswear brand and the home goods store — were used to launder money for Norero.

Some have also speculated that Landy’s murder was orchestrated either by Norero’s widow or even by Norero himself, though the true motive behind the killing remains a mystery.

Landy was laid to rest in her hometown of Quevedo on April 29, 2024, with the tightest security in place.

Lately, Ecuador has seen a surge in homicides, prison riots, and cartel activity, with the port city of Guayaquil at the heart of international cocaine operations. Daniel Noboa, the President of Ecuador, has deployed the military to confront organized crime and declared states of emergency to curb violence, though the threat remains pervasive.

Landy Párraga’s murder, captured on restaurant security footage, shocked the nation not only because of her fame but also because it revealed the deadly intersection of beauty, influence, and criminal underworld ties.

Her tragic death underscores the volatility and danger surrounding Ecuador’s high-stakes cartel networks and the risks faced by anyone connected to them. Rest in peace, Landy, and to all those who have tragically fallen victim to gang violence.
