After much speculation, Michelle Obama speaks out about alleged marital issues with Barack

Michelle Obama Explains Recent Absences

On Tuesday, former First Lady Michelle Obama opened up about taking a step back from the spotlight. In a candid interview on the Work in Progress podcast with actress Sophia Bush, she explained her recent absence from political events and addressed rumors about marital issues.

Choosing Herself First

Obama said she’s finally focusing on her own well-being. Now, eight years after leaving the White House and with two adult daughters, she controls her schedule.

“I could have made a lot of these decisions years ago,” she admitted. “But I didn’t give myself that freedom.”

This year, she said she made a conscious decision to prioritize herself over obligations. Without naming names, she shared that she turned down an event to do what felt right for her.

“I chose what was best for me—not what I had to do, or what others expected.”

Skipping Events and Setting Boundaries

Her absence from high-profile events, such as President Trump’s second inauguration and former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral, drew attention. However, Obama emphasized she still stays active.

“I still give speeches, work on projects, and support girls’ education,” she noted. “The library opens next year, and I’m involved in some parts of it, not all.”

Addressing Divorce Rumors

Obama acknowledged the public’s reaction to her choices. She believes many people couldn’t imagine her stepping back unless there was trouble in her marriage.

“So many couldn’t fathom I was choosing myself. They assumed Barack and I were divorcing.”

She reflected on how women often struggle with disappointing others and putting their own needs first.

Speaking Out Politically

Michelle has spoken openly about the challenges her marriage faced during Barack Obama’s presidency. In her memoir Becoming, she wrote about the loneliness and exhaustion of life in the White House.
