Single mom with six kids shares how she turned her “last $5” into $10M by baking cupcakes

Mignon Francois has had a remarkable transformation take place in her life, and it practically happened overnight.

From a single mother with a mere $5 to the founder of a $10 million cupcake empire, Mignon’s story is remarkable and ingenious.

In 2008, amidst an economic downturn, Mignon faced severe financial challenges in Nashville, Tennessee.

With no electricity and the responsibility of six children, she was at a crossroads.

Her pivot to baking came from an unexpected suggestion on the radio: overcoming debt through a bake sale.
Despite having no baking experience, Mignon embraced the challenge, saying, “I was tired of being sick and tired.”

She began her journey into the world of baking, initially practicing and then offering her cupcakes to neighbors.

Her big break came when a neighbor, impressed by her creations, requested 600 cupcakes for her clients.
Mignon recalls, “All I had was five dollars to my name.”

She invested this in ingredients, turning it into $60 the same day, and then $600 by the end of the week.

This marked the beginning of the Cupcake Collection, a venture that would defy odds and expectations.

Mignon’s business philosophy is encapsulated in her belief: “All you have is all you need to get you from where you are to where you want to be.”

This principle guided her as she navigated the challenges of entrepreneurship.

Her approach was not just about making cupcakes but also about building a community.

She faced skepticism over opening a bakery in an “unlikely” neighborhood.
She turned that notion on its head by seeing it as an opportunity, saying, “It was the community of the neighborhood that caused other people to want to spread it out.”

The Cupcake Collection’s success is rooted in Mignon’s innovative strategies and deep connection with her customers.

She expanded her marketing efforts to include digital and text message marketing.

She also introduced a cupcake truck- both a mobile bakery and a promotional tool.
Mignon’s management style is inclusive and empowering. She shares, “I listen to [my employees]. They tell me what it is that they need from me.”

Beyond her business acumen, Mignon’s personal journey is equally inspiring.
Balancing her role as a single mother with her entrepreneurial ambitions, she demonstrates that it’s possible to overcome significant obstacles with determination and faith.
