A young woman, the owner of a two-story apartment building, didn’t disclose her landlord status to her boyfriend when she invited him to live with her. She rented out the lower floor to a tenant for $500. Her boyfriend, upon discovering the truth, demanded 50% of her rental income.
The woman defended her rent, citing the location’s hour-long drive from the city and 15-minute distance from the nearest store, making her $500 charge reasonable. They lived together for three months without her boyfriend knowing about her property ownership. Although she didn’t ask him to contribute to rent or utilities, they split groceries.
The revelation came when her tenant reported a broken freezer. Her boyfriend, overhearing the conversation, learned she was the landlord. He became furious, criticizing her for hiding it and demanding half of her rental income. She broke up with him, and he threatened to expose her and tried to punch a wall.
Reddit users supported the woman, suggesting she change her locks. The incident highlights the importance of transparent communication in relationships.
