‘Super mom’ duck shows off her parenting prowess with over 70 ducklings in tow

Imagine a mother duck leading a parade of over 70 ducklings – a sight so extraordinary it seems almost fictional.
Yet, this is precisely the scene captured by wildlife photographer Brent Cizek on the serene waters of Lake Bemidji, Minnesota.

Cizek, an avid wildlife enthusiast, often explores the lakes near his home, camera in hand, ready to immortalize the beauty of nature.

On a summer day, despite the choppy waters making photography a challenge, Cizek embarked on an adventure in his small plastic boat, unaware of the incredible sight he was about to witness.

As he navigated the turbulent lake, Cizek stumbled upon a remarkable sight – a Common Merganser duck followed by an astonishingly large brood of ducklings.

He began counting, and to his amazement, there were 76 in total.
“I was able to then count 76 babies with her, so she had picked up more babies along the way,” Cizek shared with MNN.

The sight was not just a photographer’s dream but also a poignant reminder of nature’s wonders.

“It’s been remarkable. It’s going to be a sad day when they continue their migration,” he reflected.

Capturing this moment was no easy feat.

The rough waters made it difficult for Cizek to get a clear shot.

However, his persistence paid off, and he managed to snap a photo that perfectly encapsulated the awe-inspiring scene.

This image, once shared on his Twitter page, captured the hearts of many, quickly going viral.
The world was just as captivated by this ‘super mom’ and her extensive brood as Cizek had been.

The viral photo sparked interest among ornithologists, who offered insights into this unusual phenomenon.
Bob Dunlop, an expert in the field, explained that the ducklings were likely part of a ‘mixed-flock.’

It’s common for waterfowl to collectively lay eggs and then take turns caring for the young. “It’s more like a day-care thing,” Dunlop told The Minnesota-Star Tribune.

However, even he admitted that a flock of this size was extraordinary, a true spectacle in the avian world.

Cizek didn’t stop at capturing still images; he also filmed the flock and shared the video on YouTube.

The footage showcased the mother duck’s incredible maternal instincts, navigating the waters with her large brood in tow.
Viewers were both amazed and amused, with many YouTube commenters humorously pondering how the mother duck managed to keep track of all her ducklings.

The video and photo didn’t just entertain; they also played a crucial role in educating people about birds and wildlife conservation.

Cizek expressed his joy at how his work brought happiness to others and raised awareness about the natural world.

“I was pretty flabbergasted what was going on with the ducklings,” he said, acknowledging the uniqueness of the event.
