Community in Mourning After Tragedy at Pawtucket Ice Arena

What began as a spirited youth hockey game in Pawtucket turned into a devastating scene on the afternoon of February 16, 2026. Just before 3 p.m., gunfire broke out inside Dennis M. Lynch Arena, sending families and players scrambling for safety. Initial confusion quickly gave way to panic as spectators realized the sounds were not harmless. Authorities later confirmed that three people, including a child, lost their lives, and several others were critically injured.

Local law enforcement responded swiftly, evacuating athletes, parents, and staff while securing the scene. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves stated that the suspected shooter died from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers were not involved in the suspect’s death. Early findings indicated the incident may have been targeted and potentially connected to a family-related dispute. Roads surrounding the arena were temporarily closed as emergency crews worked, and students were safely transported away from the area while reunification procedures were arranged.

Authorities later identified the suspect as Robert Dorgan, who reportedly also used the name Roberta Esposito. A woman who identified herself as his daughter spoke to reporters, citing long-standing mental health challenges. Court records referenced by local outlets indicated prior legal disputes involving family members, though some earlier charges had been dismissed. Advocacy organizations addressing domestic violence noted that family conflicts, when left unresolved, can have far-reaching consequences for entire communities.

City leaders and school officials moved quickly to reassure families that student-athletes present at the game were accounted for and safe. Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien described the day as heartbreaking, emphasizing that what should have been a celebration of teamwork and school pride ended in sorrow. The Coventry School District confirmed its players were supervised and transported home securely. As investigations continue, the Pawtucket community remains united in grief, offering support to those affected and reflecting on the lasting impact of a tragedy that unfolded in a place once known for gathering and celebration.
