Suspect Identified After Deadly Shooting in Tumbler Ridge That Left Nine Dead

Authorities in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, have identified the suspect involved in Tuesday’s deadly shooting that resulted in nine fatalities and numerous injuries, marking one of the most serious acts of gun violence in Canada in recent years.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the suspect was 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar. Police say officers responded within minutes of receiving emergency calls and encountered an active situation upon arrival. The suspect was later found deceased.

What Investigators Have Shared

During a press briefing, RCMP officials confirmed that two victims found at a residential property were related to the suspect. Investigators believe the incident at the home occurred before the events at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

Police also stated that they had previous interactions at the residence in past years related to well-being concerns. On one prior occasion, firearms were reportedly removed from the home. Officials added that the suspect previously held a firearms license that had expired and that no weapons were currently registered in the suspect’s name.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that timelines and details may be updated as evidence is reviewed.

Casualties and Injuries

Seven of the deaths occurred at the school, including the suspect. More than two dozen people were injured, and several remain in critical condition. Officials initially reported a higher fatality number but later revised the total to nine after verification.

Emergency responders and medical teams from across the region assisted in transporting and treating victims.

National Response

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the tragedy in Parliament, expressing condolences to families and describing Tumbler Ridge as a close-knit community built on cooperation and resilience. He said the country would reflect and learn in the aftermath of the incident.

Community Support and Next Steps

Local leaders have begun organizing counseling and support services for students, families, and staff affected by the tragedy. Mental health professionals are being made available as the community processes the loss.

Law enforcement continues to gather information and asks anyone with credible details to contact authorities.
