Kate Winslet reveals how she nearly flashed King Charles during first royal meeting

Kate Winslet has met several members of the Royal Family over the years. But the first time she met King Charles, it almost ended in disaster. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show, she revealed she nearly flashed the then-prince.

Kate Winslet has been a major celebrity for decades. The 50-year-old actress from Reading has met and even worked with some of the biggest stars in the world, but in 1996, she almost had an enormous mishap when she met, perhaps, the most recognisable person from her home country.

On Wednesday, Kate Winslet appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show, revealing the first time she met King Charles. It was on the premiere of the film Sense and Sensibility in 1996, and Charles was at that moment “only” a prince.

However, it almost ended in disaster. Winslet revealed that she wore a ‘transparent black lace jumpsuit with a black coat and flat black sandals.

“The first time I met him. Oh my goodness. He had come to support the royal premiere of ‘Sense and Sensibility’ when I was only 20,” Winslet said, revealing how she almost flashed him.

“And I sort of hadn’t realized that we were really going to meet him,” Winslet continued. “And so I forgot about the fact that I really was wearing a kind of a transparent lace outfit and, thank God, I’d worn a coat because, as he’s making his way towards me, I’m like, ‘Nipples, nipples. Nipples! Oh my God!’ And then someone just went, ‘Coat!’”

Winslet managed to wrap the coat around her body, “basically covering myself in a cape.” Luckily, things ended well.

“It’s quite something to meet him”””

Further, the Titanic star praised the monarch. She met him earlier this year, in June, as she became one of the Ambassadors for The King’s Foundation.

“I mean he’s a very gentle, personable individual, but he is the king, and it’s quite something to meet him,” she said, explaining how she and Meryl Streep, who also attended the June meeting, discussed whether they were to curtsy or not.

“I said, ‘Absolutely, we have to curtsy.’ She was like, ‘OK, is it a big curtsy? What do we do?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, we’ll just make the most,’ and she was like, ‘I don’t know if we need to do that.’ There was a big panic because we didn’t know what the form was,” she added. “Obviously, we had to curtsy,” Winslet recalled.
