Today I Learned How to Properly Use the Detergent Drawer in a Washing Machine – No Wonder My Clothes Weren’t Getting Clean

Many people love the convenience of washing machines, but it’s common to feel disappointed when clothes still come out looking dull or smelling strange. The truth is, the issue often isn’t with the machine itself — it’s with how we use it.

Today, I’ll show you the right way to use your washing machine, especially how to clean and maintain the detergent drawer so your clothes come out fresh and truly clean every time.

Start with Cleaning the Detergent Drawer

One of the most overlooked parts of a washing machine is the detergent drawer. This small component plays a big role — it stores and dispenses detergent throughout the wash cycle. But over time, detergent residue, dirt, and even mold can build up inside. When that happens, your machine can’t work as efficiently, and your clothes may come out with unpleasant smells or not properly washed.

To prevent this, it’s best to clean the detergent drawer regularly — about once every two to four weeks, depending on how often you do laundry.

How to Clean the Detergent Drawer

Cleaning the detergent drawer is simpler than most people realize. First, find the small release tab in the middle of the drawer. Gently press it and pull the drawer out completely.

Once removed, wipe down every part carefully using a soft cloth or sponge. For tough residue or grime, use a toothbrush or small cleaning brush with a bit of mild detergent or a vinegar-and-water solution. If it hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you can soak it in warm water for 15–20 minutes to loosen buildup.

After that, rinse it well and let it dry completely before putting it back. Make sure the drawer slides in correctly and locks into place.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to clean the area where the drawer sits inside the machine. Dirt can build up there too, and it’s often missed.

Are You Using the Right Compartment?

A common mistake is pouring detergent straight into the drum. While laundry pods are designed for that, most liquid or powdered detergents work best when placed in the correct drawer compartment. This allows the machine to release detergent at the right time during the wash cycle.

Most detergent drawers have three sections:

  1. Pre-wash compartment (usually labeled “I”)

  2. Main wash compartment (labeled “II”)

  3. Fabric softener compartment (marked with a flower or star symbol)

Each has a different purpose:

  • The pre-wash section is for longer cycles or heavily soiled clothes.

  • The main wash section is where your regular detergent goes.

  • The fabric softener section is for softener or color-protecting additives, which are released during the final rinse.

Important: Never go past the maximum fill lines marked inside each compartment. Overfilling can cause leaks or reduce washing performance.

Final Thoughts

Your washing machine works hard every week, but a little care goes a long way in keeping it effective. By cleaning the detergent drawer regularly and using each compartment correctly, you’ll not only get cleaner, fresher clothes but also help your washing machine last longer.

It takes just a few minutes every month, but the difference is noticeable — your laundry will smell better, feel softer, and your washer will run more smoothly.

So, if your clothes haven’t been coming out as clean as you’d like, check your detergent drawer today. A quick deep clean might be all it takes to make your laundry routine easier and more effective!
