How to Fix Orange Stains on Towels

If you’ve ever pulled a favorite towel from the wash only to find strange orange marks, you’re not alone. These stubborn stains are surprisingly common, and the reasons may be hiding in your bathroom cabinet or even in your water supply.

1. Benzoyl Peroxide – This ingredient, found in many acne creams and cleansers, is the top cause. Instead of leaving a traditional stain, it actually bleaches out fabric dye, creating orange or yellow blotches. Once the fibers are stripped, the original color can’t be restored.

2. Rust in Water – If your home has iron-rich or well water, tiny rust particles can cling to fabric and create spots. The best fix is to use a rust-removing laundry additive that binds iron before it settles in.

3. Hair Products and Self-Tanners – Shampoos, hair dyes, and self-tanners contain pigments that can transfer to towels even after your hair or skin feels dry. These stains are especially stubborn on light-colored fabrics.

4. Cleaning Products – Bleach or hydrogen peroxide in household sprays can transfer from your hands to towels, leaving pale orange or yellow patches. Prevention Tips – Switch to white towels for skincare routines, allow creams and tanners to dry fully, install a water filter if needed, and keep separate towels for hair care. Fixes – Unfortunately, peroxide or bleach stains are permanent, though you can dye or repurpose the towel. Rust stains may lift with fabric-safe removers.
