Judge Frank Caprio, affectionately known as “the nicest judge in the world,” has passed away at 88 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Beloved
for his compassion and fairness, Caprio gained international fame through his viral courtroom moments, where he often balanced justice with empathy.
Born in Providence’s Italian-American neighborhood, Caprio grew up helping his father on a milk truck, learning lessons of kindness and generosity that
shaped his life. He later became a teacher, then a lawyer, and ultimately a judge whose courtroom reached millions worldwide through Caught in Providence.
His rise to fame may never have happened without his wife, Joyce. Married in 1965, the couple raised five children, seven grandchildren,
and two great-grandchildren. Joyce was the quiet anchor behind his public success, even suggesting that
his brother’s recordings of court sessions be shared more widely—an idea that led to global recognition
