Fifteen years after high school, I returned for our class time capsule. Inside was the locket my boyfriend Brian
had won for me—right before abruptly breaking up, saying I’d “ruined everything.” I never knew why until that day.
Among the keepsakes was a letter from my former best friend, Jess, confessing she had started a false rumor that
I’d cheated, even forging messages so Brian would believe it—all out of jealousy. Reading her words, I felt anger, sadness, and an odd relief.
When I confronted Jess, she admitted she’d been wrong and asked to rebuild our friendship. I didn’t forgive
her instantly, but I left the door open, seeing traces of the girl I once trusted.
Later, Brian approached me, explaining he’d believed the lie and regretted not letting me explain.
Now both in New York, he asked for one date to make new memories. I agreed—on one condition: “Only if you win me a new locket.”
For the first time in years, I felt a spark of hope.
