Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has gained a reputation as a natural solution for dandruff, but does it really work? While scientific evidence is still limited, many people swear by its scalp-clearing benefits. The idea is that ACV helps restore the scalp’s natural pH balance, encourages the removal of dead skin cells, and may reduce fungal growth — all important factors in maintaining a healthy scalp.
Experts note that ACV might be more effective for dry scalp, which is often confused with dandruff. A 2022 review hinted that ACV could soothe dryness, but since dandruff and dry scalp stem from different causes, its true effectiveness remains unclear. More research is needed to understand exactly how ACV impacts these scalp issues.
What we do know is that apple cider vinegar has mild antifungal and antibacterial properties. It may reduce certain bacteria like Staphylococcus on the scalp and could help with mild fungal problems. However, its potency varies—ACV might combat some microbes effectively, but isn’t as strong against fungi like Candida at typical dilution levels.
