I spent a year battling my controlling ex, Jack, for custody of our daughter, Mia. Just when I thought the worst was over, his new wife, Kira, began weaving her web—bribing Mia with gifts and seaside promises. One evening, Mia came home from their weekend visit and said softly, “Dad says I have another mom now.” My knees buckled under the weight of those words.
At dinner with them, I watched Kira stroke Mia’s hair and whisper, “Say thank you, Mommy.” My stomach twisted as Mia repeated it without hesitation. Jack smiled, claiming Mia needed a “real family” where both parents lived under one roof. They planned a beach trip—our beach, our dream—without me.
Then the trap closed. Kira accused me of stealing at work, and I lost my job. Jack filed to terminate my rights, using my sudden unemployment as ammunition. I mortgaged my father’s home to fight back. In court, Mia stood brave and said, “Kira buys me stuff, but I love my mom just because.”
