Dwayne Johnson opens up about devastating family loss. ‘I’ve been numb’

Dwayne Johnson is mourning the loss of one of his best friends — his French bulldog Hobbs.

The 52-year-old actor, producer and former professional wrestler took to Instagram Feb. 25 to share a carousel of photos and images in honor of his little buddy.

I’ve been numb over this loss, but we’re so grateful for every ounce of pure love he gave our entire family,” Johnson wrote in an emotional caption.

The Hall of Fame wrestler didn’t share the cause of Hobbs’ death, but clarified that he “didn’t suffer long” and “quietly and bravely left in the night.”

In the post, Johnson — also known as “The Rock” — can be seen using his dog as a pillow, receiving kisses on the chin, and toying with Hobbs around the house.

The post was set to “What’s Going On In Your World” by George Strait.

“One of my favorite songs felt appropriate here, as I wonder what’s going on his new world, because I know what it’s like in mine,” Johnson wrote in the caption.

“Not sure how spirits work but come back and visit every once in a while so we can get in trouble and laugh again,” he concluded.

Hobbs has been by Johnson’s side for nearly a decade and was even cast in one of his “Fast & Furious” movies in 2019.

He described Hobbs as the “biggest star the Fast & Furious franchise has ever seen” in a 2019 Instagram post.

Hobbs also accompanied Johnson in his 2024 GQ cover shoot back in November.

In 2015, Johnson took to Instagram to share a “fun Labor Day weekend story.”

“We just decided to add two new members to our Johnson family,” the iconic actor wrote in a caption alongside a photo of him holding two French bulldogs in a pool.

“In my right hand is BRUTUS and in my left hand is HOBBS,” he added.

Johnson later revealed that he named Hobbs after Luke Hobbs — the character Johnson played in the “Fast & Furious” series, per Today.

After bringing the two dogs home, he immediately let them outside to “handle their business and potty like big boys.” Instead, the two puppies sprinted directly into the pool.

“HOBBS immediately starts doggy paddling while BRUTUS (like a brick) sinks head first to the bottom of the pool,” he wrote.

Johnson, using his father instincts, jumped in the pool and rescued his “brick” of a dog before watching him run off with his baby brother Hobbs.

Three weeks later, Johnson announced the death of his beloved dog Brutus.

“At approximately 11:15pm last night,” he wrote in a 2015 Instagram post, “[we] had to make the painful decision to end Brutus’ suffering by taking him off of life support and sending his soul to pup heaven.”

He explained that Brutus ate a toxic mushroom that destroyed his liver and immune system “to the point of no return.”

“I encourage all of you out there to be mindful of mushrooms in your yards, parks or anywhere outside your dogs play. What looks innocent, can be deadly to your lil’ family members,” he continued.

Now nearly 10 years later, Brutus and Hobbs are together again — chasing each other through doggie heaven.
