93-year-old doctor welcomes baby with young wife – reveals startling wish

A 93-year-old doctor in Australia has recently made headlines after becoming a father again with his 36-year-old wife. But it’s what he revealed next that left many stunned.

Born in the 1930s, Dr. John Levin spent 57 years married to his first wife, Veronica. Together, they raised three children before her death in 2013. Tragically, in 2024, he also lost his eldest son, Greg, 65, to motor neurone disease.

Despite these deep personal losses, Levin didn’t retreat from life – he reinvented it.

Finds love with younger woman

In the wake of his grief, he began learning Mandarin, a decision that would soon change everything. His teacher, Dr. Yangying Lu, captured his heart.

“He was a terrible student,” Lu told the Herald Sun, per news.com.au. “After the third lesson, I told him to stop. I didn’t want to rip him off!”

The two married in Las Vegas in 2014, defying a 56-year age gap and public skepticism.

Shutting down speculation of ulterior motives, she insists “It was a love match,” and had nothing to do with money. In fact, Levin was bankrupt when they met and she denies being a “gold digger.”

‘I want a part of him’

For several years, the couple lived a quiet life. But during Melbourne’s strict COVID-19 lockdowns, everything changed.

Isolated and reflective, Lu began to think seriously about their future: “We did some soul-searching, asking ourselves where do we want to be, what do we want to see in our lives in 10 years’ time,” she told the Herald, per the Daily Mail.

One thought became clear in her mind: if something were to happen to Levin, she wanted a part of him to live on.

“I thought to myself, if I lose him (Dr Levin), I want a part of him. I wanted to have a child,” she said.

Pregnant on first try

That decision set the couple on a path to parenthood. They turned to IVF and used donor sperm – and to their amazement, Lu became pregnant on their very first attempt.

“I was very lucky,” she said, acknowledging how difficult the process can be for many women. “We achieved a pregnancy on the first try… It can be so difficult for many women. One of my mothers’ group took 14 cycles to produce her daughter.’ One [in] my mothers’ group took 14 cycles to produce her daughter.”

In February 2024, baby Gabby was born. For Levin – now considered “Australia’s oldest father” – holding his newborn son at age 93 was “unbelievable,” he recently said on Nova’s Jase & Lauren podcast.

“Of course, being there for his 21st is a goal,” which would make him 113.

‘Australia’s oldest dad’

Since Gabby’s birth, the couple has had to navigate public curiosity and assumptions – especially regarding their ages. “People think at first that he is Johnny’s grandson, or sometimes great-grandson,” Lu said. “When we explain, they can’t contain their surprise. But for us, it’s about the choices that make us happy. We can’t control how other people feel.”

Dr. Lu, who is currently converting to Judaism, is also preparing for what the future may hold, including the possibility of raising Gabby on her own. “With modern families these days, you see different types of families, and they make it work. If other people can make it work, so can I.”

The couple is not without support. Lu’s mother helps with Gabby, and Dr. Levin’s extended family – including his two surviving adult children, ten grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter – have welcomed the new arrival.

Not quite done

But just as the family has begun to adjust, Dr. Levin dropped one more surprise.

“We’re thinking of another one. We’d like to have a little girl,” he told Nova 100.

While Lu was quick to add, “We’re still talking,” the couple has already returned to the IVF process.
