The Statler Brothers Show was one of the most popular television shows on The Nashville Network when it aired for seven seasons in the 1990s. Before the success of their variety show, the Statler brothers performed backup for Johnny Cash.
The band’s style was closely linked to their gospel roots and when they went off on their own, they recorded many popular songs of their own, including this one, “More Than A Name On A Wall”.
The emotional song recounts the loss of a son to war. A mother grieves the loss of her son who died in the Vietnam War. She approaches the war memorial where her son’s name is etched on a black stone wall.
She then looks up to Heaven and wants God to know that her boy was special, sharing her feelings and cherished memories as a reminder that her son “was more than a name on a wall”.
